B-class gourmet includes ordinary yet tasty foods such as ramen noodles, grilled yakitori chiken kababs and so on.

A-class gourmet cuisine refers to higher priced food.  The festival for B-class local specialitties promotes localities by show casting cheap and delicious dishes that are loved by the locals.  Participants in the festival aim to introdue popular local cuisine and to deepen knowledge of their town at a national wide level.  Visitors also must wait in long line to taste their desired dish.

I live in nothern island of Hokkaido in Japan and love local B-class gourmet in Hokkaido.

I will show you some of my favorite dishes.

Genghis Khan(dish with mutton and vegetables)

The origin of jingisukan dates back roughly 70 years, when Hokkaido’s residents first began eating the meat from sheep that they sheered for their wool.

Now, the typical jingisukan dish consists of mutton or lamb cooked with plenty of vegetables in a round metal skillet with a bulge in the middle.

Ika-meshi(squid rice)

Ikameshi is a Japanese dish composed of squid cooked with rice inside. It is a regional dish from the Oshima area of Hokkaido.

Ikameshi is prepared by removing tentacles from and gutting the squid, which is then stuffed with washed rice and cooked in Japanese stock.

Supa-katsu(spaghetti with meat sauce and pork cuttlet on the grilled iron plate )

Supa-katsu is the local speciality in Kushiro city, south east of Hokkaido.  It is a spaghetti with meat sauce and pork cuttlet on the piping hot grilled iron plate. Spa is a obbriviation of spagetti and katsu is a obbribiation of cuttlet.

South east part of Hokkaido in winter, it is surprisingly cold. To get warm in winter, people prefer to eat hot dishes. Hot grilled iron plate can keep spagetti warm.  

They are powerfully volumy. If you come to Kushiro city, you cannot miss to eat them.



 

Buta-don

Buta-do is a bowl of rice covered with pork and vegetables. This is the local speciality in east part of Hokkaido, especially Tokachi area.

Pork are broiled on the charcoal fire and diped in a special thick souce. This process is done over and over.  When pork are ready, they are put on big bowl of rice.

Ishikari-nabe

Ishikari-nabe is the seafood hot pot dish in Hokkaido, especially Ishikari area. In Hokkaido there is a lot of amazing delicious vegetables that are cultivate, like potatoes, corn, onion, cabbage… And Hokkaido’s sea are full of seafood!And this is the reason why sake  (salmon) is the main ingredient of this hot pot, because it’s in Hokkaido’s sea that the Japanese salmon is catch.

Sappro Ramen – Japanese Noodles the Hokkaido way

Japanese noodles, well actually, ramen originated from China but the Japanese have adopted it, added some extra features and made it their own.

you’ll find a lot of Ramen Restaurants around the downtown areas of Sapporo like Odori and Sapporo Station where they serve sweetcorn in the ramen. Miso flavor soup ramen is especially famous. Another feature is that there are lots of vegitables on the ramen. This is Sapporo ramen.
