The temple has a great historical importance.

It’s because that the temple had a deep connection to the Emperor Saga (嵯峨天皇), who was a child of the Emperor Kanmu (桓武天皇) who had transferred the capital to Kyoto from Nara.

It was the Emperor Saga who took a strong leadership during the time of the capital relocation, and as a result, stabilized the political turmoil.

He loved the place called Saga (嵯峨), instead of the new capital.

Because of that, he established a detached palace at the place, which was a predecessor of Daikaku-ji Temple.

He treated priests who brought new knowledge and culture from China, with great respects.

He allowed Kukai (空海), one of the priests, to establish a building in which he enshrined the statues of five gods and pray in the palace.

Thirty years after his death, his daughter determined to use the palace as a temple, and this was Daikaku-ji Temple.
