Yamaguchi: becoming more popular as a tourist destination in Japan!

Have you ever been to Yamaguchi?

Maybe not many people have visited there, but it’s becoming more popular among Japanese people!

Some of you may know that the prefecture is famous for puffer fish and Shimonoseki city, but it has other wonderful tourist destinations.

Today I’m gonna tell you why Yamaguchi appeals to more people.

① Ruriko-ji temple (瑠璃光寺)

Ranking with Horyu-ji temple in Nara and Godai-ji temple in Kyoto, Ruriko-ji temple is regarded as a temple with the most beautiful five-story tower in Japan. It also has the historical importance, because it’s the most handsome building which in Muromachi era. You can’t miss seeing the temple at night because it’s lighted up and looks more beautiful!

② Aoumi-jima island (青海島)

Aoumi-jima is a part of Nagato city (長門市). It’s famous because of its spectacular nature. The island is called “The Alps on the sea”.

You can see amazing views of wave-cut cliffs, which makes you realize the reason why it’s called “The Alps on the sea”! You can walk around the island along the road “Memorial road”, or you also enjoy riding a cruiser. If you want to enjoy more, let’s try diving there. The island is a popular diving spot!

③ Kintai-bashi bridge(錦帯橋)

Kintai-bashi bridge, regarded as one of the three beautiful bridges in Japan, is located in Iwakuni-city(岩国市). It has five arches, and surprisingly, was built of wood! It’s now a sort of landmark, and also is a popular tourist destination in the city.

In addition to the bridge, the town itself has an old Japanese taste, and you will see what an old city in Japan was like.

④ Motonosumi-inari shrine (元乃隅稲荷神社)

Chosen as one of the 31 most beautiful place in Japan, Motonosumi-inari shrine has a growing popularity among tourists.

Are you a good pitcher? If so, try to throw money into an offertory box! The shrine is also famous for putting the offertory box on torii(鳥居), a Shinto gateway!

I recommend that you should go there by car.

⑤ Akiyoshi-dai (秋吉台)

Akiyoshi-dai is in Mine city(美祢市), and is the biggest karst tableland in Japan.

It has a large-scaled limestone cave named “Akiyoshi-dou (秋芳洞)”. There is a road for tourists in the cave, and you can safely look around the cave. You must be surprised at an artistic scenery inside the cave, and can feel the forces of nature!

Do you like to eat fishes?

Here, Yamaguchi prefecture has Karato-market. It has several places to eat, which give you fresh seafood landed every day!

For those who don’t like row fishes, you can eat cooked fishes, thus do not worry.

⑦ Fuku-no-Kawaku(ふくの河久)

Some of you may know that Yamaguchi prefecture is famous for balloon fishes, but they’re very expensive.

However, in Fuku-no-Kawaku, very closed to Karato-market, serves the fish relatively reasonably.

⑧ Tsuno-shima bridge (角島大橋)

Tsuno-shima bridge is the place where people living there strongly recommend to visit.

The entire length of the bridge is 1,780m, the longest open road in Japan, with an amazing view.

On a sunny day, you will see the blue beautiful sea, and the bridge looks like floating on the sea!

Just rent a car and enjoy the scenery!

⑨ Kawara-soba(瓦そば)

Wanna have some local food?

Here, I introduce “Kawara-soba (瓦そば)”.

It’s not just buckwheat noodle made with Japanese tea. It’s unique, because the noodle is served on a heated tile which is used to build a roof of a Japanese traditional house!

There are many restaurants which serve it, thus just try when you find the word “瓦そば(Kawara-soba)”!
