Japanese student’s home work on summer vacation

How Japanese students spend summer vacation.

In Japan, school start from April and finish on March. New grade starts from April and student can spend summer vacation from middle of June till end of August.
Most of student in primary school have to write diary every day as home work of summer vacation. On this diary, sometimes illustration also required. In addition to, they have to record weather on diary. Therefore, they must collect newspaper to get information of weather before, but now we can get such information on internet. Students are able to record weather easily even if they forget to show news, or reading newspaper.

Many home works required

Most of primary school and junior high school student have to finish home work of Mathematics, Japanese, science, social studies, and fine arts.
Especially many students struggle to done drawing some poster regarding to ecology or something for fine arts and writing book report. If teachers find very excellent drawing or report, they propose them for contests. These contest are mostly held by city or prefecture, and student will get some gift like library card.
End of August, some student notice that they forget to finish homework especially fine arts and book report, and they ask their parents to help to finish.

However, Japanese students can enjoy summer vacation enough. Fire work festival is one of Japanese tradition. They fully enjoyed summer vacation with family and friend, but most of 9th grade (in Japan, Junior high school 3rd grade, 15 years old) have to prepare to take examination to enter senior high school. Some of student in primary school also have to prepare that to enter private junior high school, so they go to cram school from summer vacation.
