What is a capsule toy?A capsule toy is a small capsule with a toy or figurine inside. You would think this is only for children? But no! Believe it or not, capsule toys are very popular among adults!
How do we get capsule toys? Well, this is where the fun begins. Insert money into a vending machine (like a gum ball machine) containing the capsules, turn the handle and a capsule come bouncing out of the machine. One capsule costs about 100 to 500 yen (about 1-5 dollars).Because it doesn’t cost much, many people try again and again until they finally find the one they want. The capsule toys have become quite collectable in the last few years. And, yes, it is very addictive!
Why is it so addictive?Capsule toys were originally made for kids. No adults were interested in these kinds of products in the past and they cost only 100yen. Machines were usually installed in shopping arcades. However, new products targeted at adults have been launched, especially since the boom in Manga has become so widespread. As these products get more popular, the prices get higher and, unfortunately, they are not really one coin treats any more. But they are still not too pricey, and so are very collectable. This is definitely one of the main reasons for their popularity. The excitement and anticipation of wondering what’s going to come out, or whether I’ll get what I want has people coming back time and time again. As you can see from the picture above, you can see lots of different machines in anime shops.
