Hi.
It may be a good experience to visit a remote island when you travel Japan.
Niijima (新島), a part of Izu Island chain (伊豆諸島), which belongs to Tokyo, is one of the best choices when you plan to stay in a remote island.

Why?
It’s not only because the island has an easy access from Tokyo, but also because you can enjoy traveling by a passenger boat which departs from Tokyo at night!

Today, I’m gonna introduce how to use a passenger boat bound for Niijima island!

1. Make a reservation on the Internet

Firstly, you make a reservation on the site of Tokai-kisen.
You need to create an account, but you can receive the 15% discount during busy season, and 20% during non-busy season.
For those who want to know the fares, please visit the site.

2. Go to Takeshiba Sanbashi (竹芝桟橋)

Takeshiba Sanbashi (竹芝桟橋) is the place where a passenger boat departs.
It’s closed to Takeshiba station on a monorail named Yurikamone (ゆりかもめ).

When you arrive there, firstly visit a terminal.

When you get your ticket at the wicket, get on a passenger boat named Sarubia-maru (サルビア丸)!
Usually boarding time is 10:35 pm, and departure is 11:00pm.
I recommend you should be there with your ticket around 10:00pm, because, as you know, Japanese people usually obey schedule.

Sarubia-maru stops not only at Niijima, but also Ooshima (大島), Rijima (利島), Shikinejima (式根島), and Kamitsushima (神津島).

It’s a special second class cabin.

It’s said that it’s like to sleep on a carpet with a blanket.

If you are tall, be careful.

The cabin has a low ceiling and you may bump your head on the ceiling.

The second class cabin is for people who don’t mind sleeping in an all-sleep-together-in-a-huddle area.

If you choose a second class seat, you just have a reclining seat.
