Starbucks Japan Debuts The Baked Cheesecake Frappuccino

Starbucks Japan’s Newest Drink

Starbucks’s limited-edition new blended drink, the Baked Cheesecake Frappuccino, debuted in its Japanese stores on June 1. June 1 is “Cheese Day” in Japan, which apparently originated from the tradition of saying “cheese!” when taking photos (June 1 is Photography Day here).

Japanese consumers are really into limited-edition products from their favourite brands, and Starbucks is no exception. Following its recent limited-edition blended beverages featuring fruity flavours like apricot, melon, and strawberry, Starbucks had attracted lots of attention with its promotions for its cheesecake drink. Would it really taste like cheesecake?

So does it taste like cheesecake?

The first thing that may come as a pleasant surprise as you take your first sip are the graham-cracker bits that come up through your straw along with the cold, creamy drink. The graham-cracker bits are super crunchy and fragrant, evoking the baked crust of cheesecake, and pair really well with the creamy texture of the drink.

The blended drink itself is milky, creamy and white, topped with light-yellow whipped cream. Among the main ingredients of a real cheesecake are milk, sugar, eggs, cream, and of course, cheese. The Baked Cheesecake Frappuccino doesn’t taste particularly “cheesy.” I tastes more like a smooth, creamy dessert milkshake with graham cracker crumb-topping rather than a cheesecake in drink form (a good thing in my book!). If anything, it’s the pairing of the crunchy graham crackers with the creamy dessert-flavour of the drink that evoke the essence of a baked cheesecake.

At my packed local Starbucks on a Thursday afternoon, a good number of customers were tasting the new drink for themselves (and of course, snapping pics on their smartphones before the first sip!).

Summary

Whether or not you’re a cheesecake fan, if you like icy-cold creamy milkshakes and graham crackers, you’ll likely enjoy the new Baked Cheesecake Frappuccinno!
